Secretary’s report was approved.
Treasurer’s report: The 2004 financial audit is complete and was approved.
Terry Thalhofer’s request for a $100 donation for the Team in Training Leukemia Society was approved.
Membership report: Bill was not present due to illness. A get-well card was passed around and will be sent to Bill.
Website/Communications: Rick has disabled a lot of the posting of spam on the message board.
Next year the Chuckanut 50K will have fully automated registration but payment of the fee will be mailed in. Other races may also want online registration. PayPal (2.9% fee) could be a payment option. Online renewals are a possibility. There is now an online shopping cart for club sweatshirts on the website. Report and discussion will continue at the next board meeting.
Race Director Liaison: Tjalling reported the 38th Birch Bay Marathon (now certified) had about 75 entrants and broke even financially.
The Honeywagon Run paid the WWU cycling club for volunteers to help with that event. The 50K had approximately 270 runners. Sixty pre-registered runners did not show up for the start. A raise in fees and/or charging club members a fee may help to decrease the no-shows, but that issue needs to be discussed with race director Krissy Sybowski. Krissy may have chip-timing next year.
The Haggen to Haggen 5K will have police participation provided free this year. More volunteers are needed. Gale will provide physical proof of insurance so Alison can complete the permit process.
The Chuckanut Footrace sponsor is now Fairhaven Runners. Linda Beckman, co-director, said $500 will be returned to the GBRC. Active.com will provide registration and the club wants to make sure other running stores can handle registration. Linda has a band for the race finish and is working on food.
Alison’s Race Director Workshop was held at Discovery Park Storage on March 12. About 10 people participated. The operation of the Chronomix race clock and the Seiko timers were demonstrated. Registration, finish line set-up and the new equipment check-out sheet were discussed. Alison also gave out copies of the up-dated Race Director Guidelines/Checklist.
The 1-mile mile-marker sign lost at the Honeywagon Run was returned at our meeting by Polly. (The sign had been returned to Fairhaven Runners.) The 9-mile sign lost earlier has been replaced. The club has enough “Runner on Road” signs for now.
Equipment Manager/Tech Coordinator: Carolyn relayed Alison’s report. Alison has made and posted a new equipment checkout/check-in form for all race items for GBRC and non-GBRC races. Please use it so equipment isn’t misplaced in anyone’s garage. Re: certified flaggers---Bellingham Technical College can do a certification class just for our club if wanted. After discussion, we decided to hire certified flaggers due to liability issues.
Ice packs are in the first aid kit.
Race permits are becoming harder to get. Certified flaggers are being required, in most cases, if traffic is stopped.
Events/Activities: Christy reported a picnic and run at Lake Padden in July and an adventure run later in the summer are being planned. An idea for an educational event was body-fat testing which was popular in the past.
Old Business: Volunteer Support Program: Polly and Jean LaValley are the coordinators and have called the high schools for volunteers. The Haggen to Haggen will need 20 high school volunteers from 2 schools. Some seasons cross-country or track team volunteers may not be available. Boy Scouts (4 kids to 1 adult) are also being considered. Race directors should have phone numbers to call for school volunteers several weeks in advance of their events.
Len presented the 2006 operating budget for reference purposes only.
The Race Entry Fee Structure update committee discussed new fees for non-members of $8 for race distances under 6.5 miles and $10 for over 6.5 miles. The 50K, marathon, and Chuckanut footrace would be excluded. Those under 14 would be free. Fees for members were discussed with no changes planned now except for perhaps the 50K. These issues will be discussed at the next meeting.
New Business: Birch Bay International Road Race wants to encourage GBRC members to run by making a challenge between the Semiahmoo Running Club and the GBRC.
Track Workout report: Approximately 35 runners are participating at the Squalicum HS track with coach Mike Karl.
Newsletter deadline is April 15.
The next meeting will be held Monday, May 15, 6:30pm at the St. Luke’s Health Education Center on Squalicum Parkway.
